Finding The Right Place For Your Chicken House

When you have decided to purchase a chicken coop or chicken house, it is necessary that you choose the right place to put it.  The chicken coop should be placed in a warm place if you are living in a colder climate but it must also have enough air for the chickens to breathe.

Your chickens must have a comfortable shelter with enough fresh air and good ventilation.  A window facing in a southerly direction is advised to allow daylight into the coop.  The first concern of people planning to buy a chicken coop is where to put it.

Here are some tips on the right place to put it:

To save money, you can put your chicken house directly on the ground but be sure that the soil beneath is tightly packed down so that it will not get muddy when it rains.  If you have a problem with rats though, you need to understand that they thrive on dirt so putting your chicken coop directly on soil can be risky.

For a heavy duty foundation, you can put the coop on a concrete floor.  It is easier to clean and maintain.  This may cost more but it is obviously better than putting it on the ground.

If you want a cost effective but easy to clean foundation for your chicken coop or chicken house, you can put it on a wooden floor.  It takes little time to build and is easy to make.  The problem with wood though, is it can rot especially when the ground has a lot of moisture, and it is more susceptible to rats.

Another cheaper option is to put it on straw, sawdust, or grass clippings.  Cleaning it is easier because you only have to replace the straw or sawdust when the need arise.
