Train Your German Shepherd – They Can Be Testy

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

One of the very intelligent and devoted breed of dogs that are brought up as pets, German Shepherds are known for their active and persevering nature.

German Shepherds are different from other breeds of dogs that are popular as household pets.

Training a German Shepherds is a demanding job requiring a good deal of patience and a lot of attention. They have to be exercised all the time. However, if you are familiar with their behavior, training a German Shepherd will not be difficult.

What you should remember, and this is important, is that German Shepherds are relatives of the dogs in the wild. They resemble them and the wolves in several respects.

It is interesting to note that the German Shepherds retain the notion of having a lead dog, which is the Alpha dog. In the wild, the packs of dogs always have a leader, the Alpha dog. Immediately next to it, in the line of leadership of the pack, is the Beta dog.

If you want to be successful in training your dog, you must make him believe that you are the Alpha dog of his pack. When you have convinced him of this you will have no further difficulty in getting him to pay attention to your commands and obey them.

You should know that the German Shepherds are a breed of dogs that do their best, always

Your German Shepherd will not accept your Alpha dog position docilely. He will constantly try to find weaknesses in your leadership and will try to become the Beta dog.

A German Shepherd will question your position as the Alpha dog, and try to usurp that position, by deliberately disobeying your orders or make you lose your temper. However, you must not allow yourself to show signs of anger or displeasure. You should simply and effectively put them in their place

Your dog must be convinced that you the strong leader of the pack. He will not follow your commands until he is fully convinced about it.

In the end, after accepting you to be the Alpha Dog, your German Shepherd will try to be the Beta Dog of the pack.

German Shepherds will try to dominate other dogs in the house, if you happen to have them. You should be on the look out for such behavior of your German Shepherd.

The desire to dominate is instinctive for a German Shepherd but this will not go well with your other dogs.

It will not be a good idea for you to have along with the German Shepherd, other breeds of dogs with similar fierce disposition in your house. This will lead to ugly situations when the dogs strongly compete with each other to be the leader of the pack.

American Bulldog Teaching – Do Not Let Your Dog Be A Nuisance

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

American bulldogs are a huge and probably dangerous breed of dog and are very good guard dogs because no-one in their right mind would go up against one just to get a couple of things out of your house. They can also make great pets, but you need to be pro-active in their training. Because of their potentially assertive behavior, you have to be consistent in their training from the first day you get your new pet.

American Bulldog training offers challenges that isn’t be faced when training other dog breeds. This does not imply an American Bulldog is a bad choice for a pet; you just need to be conscious of their unique behavior patterns.

The most important thing that offers challenges with an American Bulldog is their size. They are large animals and need space to run. With their large size, they can do way more damage than a Chihuahua.

These dogs can be particularly frolicsome. This suggests they like to run around and jump on things. Even when they are just playing, they can do plenty of damage due to their size. They’re possibly not a good choice if you have small kids.

They can be particularly protective so American Bulldog training needs to involve exposing them to lots of folk. They have to see people as ordinary and amicable so they do not attack everybody they see making an attempt to defend you, their beloved owner.

American Bulldogs have also been understood to be very aggressive with other dogs of the same sex. They may also be awfully aggressive with pussies and other little animals.

The very last thing to be conscious of with American Bulldogs is that some people can view them extraordinarily negatively whether or not they never do something wrong. This makes American Bulldog training crucial not just something that’s pleasant to do. Getting help from a first-class training system like the secrets to Dog Training is absolutely essential to successful training.

The Importance of a Good Feeder.

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

Hummingbirds usually get all their energy they need from flower nectar and sugar. These birds have great metabolism and they are active throughout the day. The birds rely on the proteins and nutrients that they get from the nectar to aid their thirst to fly and navigate continuously. Humming birds are actually flycatchers and go after flies; they need the sugar as a fuel to go after their actual target. Hummingbirds are hungry most of the time, this is the main reason that people have found that the best way to invite these birds near the house is to have feeders and other devices that can dispense sugar and nectar to get these birds to eat and fly around them.

Hummingbird feeders have come a long way since their inception. Many research projects have given way to good styled efficient feeds that can invite the birds near these feeders in large numbers. The first hummingbird feeders were made of glass. Nowadays the feeders come in various different materials that give you choice to choose from. The feeders that are manufactured now are made of plastic, glass and ceramics. Since these feeders were only invented recently many birds do not come to know them as food source but most of the birds tend to learn soon and invite other birds too. The birds also learn to use these feeders effectively. In case you find the birds near your home to be more familiar with one type of feeder to the other, then it is because they are familiar with that. You can change and try many feeders before you settle upon one.

Location is an important thing while keeping a hummingbird feeder. The location determines whether you get many hummingbirds or not. The feeder will not lure many birds if you do not keep it in a natural place. The open places give the hummingbirds a lot of elevation to go around and then come back to eat the nectar and syrup. The feeder kept in a natural place will also give the birds the confidence.

There are many kinds of feeder units available. The most important thing that one has to look for while selecting a hummingbird feeder is the ease of assembly and disassembly. The feeders must have the feature to fit into any place easily. The basin feeders are the best bet for anyone trying to get a hummingbird feeder installed. Fresh syrup is very much necessary to make sure hummingbirds come to the feeder units. A good feeder must be easy to maintain and clean up.

There are different kinds of shapes that are being developed every year to make the hummingbird feeders more efficient. The latest ones make sure that there is enough room for the hummingbirds to rest near the feeder and also have traps to invite insects and flies that are then eaten by the hummingbirds. There are other feeders that come in different colors adding to the esthetic sense of having a hummingbird feeder. Humming bird feeders are used widely all over the United States these days.

Pet Accessories For All Pets

Friday, May 14th, 2010

We love to pamper our pets! Whether it-s a new toy, a special brand of food, or even a professional shampoo and blow dry, the pet industry has turned pet accessories into a burgeoning business, providing just about anything you can imagine one of your furry friends could enjoy.

There are many categories for accessories. Simple collars in this year’s newest colors all the way to custom built dog houses that match your own, and are big enough for even you to go to visit in!

Pet clothing is of course the leading line of accessories. Even if you don’t believe in dressing your pet, there are many situations where it could even be in your pet’s best interests. In climates that experience severe weather such as heavy rains, snow, cold, or even extreme sun and heat, many types of clothes are necessary to keep your pet safe and comfortable. They are warm blooded creatures who do feel the cold and enjoy being bundled up on those early morning walks.

Some accessories are actually in the “necessary” category; at least, they aren’t considered to be totally extravagant purchases. Heated doggie beds for cold climates are pretty much the norm, especially for large dogs who can’t get up on the bed with you to enjoy your new down comforter. These are also highly recommended by vets for older dogs who suffer from joint problems.

If your pet loves running water, consider one of those new water filtration systems that look like garden fountains. The water is constantly recycled and can be flavored, have vitamins added, and even be filtered. Many come with insulated bottoms into which you can enclose ice, which is a nice touch in summer months. The water will stay cold for about 12 hours.

Gates are considered accessories, but again, these are necessary in many instances. New pups need to be trained using a gate, and simply have an area where you pet can feel safe and have his own private time is a good thing for everyone in the household.

For pet owners who prefer something simple, but still enjoy accessorizing their pets, matching collars and harnesses are popular. Pet owners with multiple pets can buy matching pet collars, and even buy matching scarves and accessories for themselves!

Locate all the different deals you can get on pet accessories by searching online. There you can find many dog accessories and other choices. Head online for your needs now.

Sam Helps a Dog With Hot Spots

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Billy was driving around and had to stop at a red light. As he waited for the light to turn green, he noticed a dog sitting next to a wall licking itself extensively. While he sat and sat, the light seemed to take forever, he watched as the dog chewed and licked itself. As he watched her, he noticed a bright red spot and what appeared like blood. The dog was chewing itself so much, it was starting to bleed.

Billy decided to pull his car over to the curb and have a closer look at her. He was well aware that if he drove away, it would bug him for weeks. As first, when Billy climbed out of his car, the dog didn’t even look at him. As he moved closer, Billy could hear her whimpering as she chewed. He approached her cautiously and slowly reached out to her.

The circular area was swollen and red and was several inches across. She was completely bald in that region, and she continued to chew and lick. The more he watched, the more she just looked wretched.

Todd was fortunate to find a name and phone number on her tags. He called the number and the owner told him that she had escaped the day before and they had been searching for her. When Todd told him about the dog hot spot, the owner was not familiar with the condition, but wanted to get there as soon as possible.

As soon as Sally got there, Sam showed her the hot spot. “Over the years I’ve seen dog hot spots and this is definitely one.”, said Sam. “If this is not taken care of soon, she may get several more sites like it.” They talked about it and decided that the overnight vet a few miles away would be a good idea.

After the vet did the initial interview, he shaved all of the coat from the area and cleaned it. As Todd got ready to leave, he was happy that he had found her. In a couple of weeks, her coat would start to grow back and she would be well on her way to recovery.

Susan helps educate dog owners about bad dog hot spots and tries to help people end dog hot spots.

Want to Learn How to Have Fun with Hummingbirds at Home?

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Numerous things can be done to attract hummingbirds to your garden. Some easy adjustments can be made to make your garden hummingbird friendly, so that you are rewarded with the presence of feeding and nesting hummingbirds alongwith their young ones.

The diet of hummingbirds consists of insects, flower nectar or artificial sugar water. Thus, artificial sugar water solution can be kept in your garden to attract them. The hummingbirds do not have any sense of smell and they rely on sites to find their source of food. If you are making a first attempt to feed the birds, you can hang or plant some red flowers near the feeder. The hummingbirds will be attracted to these red flowers and will easily find the feeders.

The hummingbirds are attracted to the red color, so any feeder having red on it will attract the birds. If your feeder doesn’t have the red color, an artificial red flower can be tied to the feeder and stay away from using the red food coloring in the sugar water which is harmful to them. You must also remember that the hummingbirds are very territorial. Male hummers may show their dominance by hovering or chasing away the other hummers from their feeders. So you can add other hummingbird feeders to your garden and thereby attract more of these birds.

You should use the standard sugar water solution for feeding the hummingbirds. Make this solution at home which you can store in the refrigerator for a week. Avoid using honey or sugar substitutes for feeding the birds which can harm them, as honey promotes a fatal fungal disease and sores in the mouth of hummingbirds. Placing the feeder in a shady and cool spot will prevent the nectar’s spoilage.

Planting a hummingbird garden with their favorite plants will attract more and more of the birds. A few plants which you can consider planting are manzanita, butterfly busch, azalea, honeysuckle, bee balm, coral bells, columbine, cardinal flowers, petunia, shrimp plant, etc. You should note that none of these plants have to be red colored to attract the birds. Also, you can check with your local nursery if having any doubts, whether any of them will flourish in your garden area.

Never try using artificial sweeteners or honey for feeding the hummingbirds. The quick fermentation of honey in the feeder can cause sores in the birds’ mouth or promote a fatal fungal disease. You have to clean the feeders and change the nectar solution every 3-4 days, or more frequently if the weather is hot. Use a good bottle brush to clean the inside of your feeder if any mold formation occurs. Some sand and water can also be added inside the feeder and shaken to remove these molds. Instead of using soaps and detergents, you can use hot water with little white vinegar to wash and rinse the feeders, as the birds do not like any traces of soap.

Planting some of the favorite plants of hummingbirds will also attract them to your garden. Some of these plants include honeysuckles, petunias, trumpet vine, fuchsias, lilacs, bee balm, geraniums, manzanita, azaleas, butterfly busch, mimosa, columbine, salvia and Indian paintbrush. You can ask your local nursery or garden store for the other plants which grow well in your area. Do not use pesticides on these plants as they can sicken or kill the hummers, if ingested.

Getting Started In Your Own Worm Farm

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Often folks raise chickens while there are others who prefer livestock but if you want to help cultivate the soil and restore all of its lost nutrients then what you should do is build a worm farm yourself instead of buying one. The nice thing about creating your own worm farm is that the price isn’t that much. All you’ll need are 3 to 4 stacked bins or plastic bins, wood or some other light and waterproofed material, a few worms, and some insect screen to go on the bottom torn up newsprint, yard earth or potting compost, water and good bits of organic garbage.

When you have all these materials, it’s time to commence building the worm farm by poking some holes in the lid and some on the bottom too. The number of holes in the lid will depend on the size of the box or bin but keep in mind that the holes must be evenly spaced to allow oxygen to come through, as well as any excess water as well as to let any worm waste drain along with the water. The strip of insect screen needs to be put on the bottom of the tub.

Now that you have worked on the outside of the worm farm it’s time to go to the inside by filling the container with newspaper. It works out best if you put three quarters of this inside and dampens it with water before you add the garden soil or potting mix in the grit this is done to be sure that the worms eat the scraps you give them. Once everything is ready, it’s time to show the worms into their new home. Some people might put in 1000 worms and as long as you make sure they’re content they will multiply and you will most likely lose count of exactly how many you have.

But what do we do the other bins? Well, the last step is to put the other containers over the original one.

If you have any idea what worms like to eat, a few examples are coffee grounds or tea bags, crushed egg shells, fruit peel, hair clippings, stale cookies and cakes, saw dust, plate scrapings, moist cardboard, vacuum cleaner debris and vegetable waste. So in other words, worms love leftovers but try not to put too much in since it is possible to overfeed them a good way to figure out how many is sufficient is to put in a small amount at first and then watch and see how long it takes form them to eat it before you put in more food. Since the area is large it’ll also help to lay their food in different locations each time.

Check on your worms regularly so you can be certain that the shredded damp newspaper doesn’t dry out and if the old newspaper needs to be changed, make sure to replace this with a new one.

Naturally, poop will appear at the bottom of the box but that waste product might also be called vermicast and it helps plants grow. The only way you can get at the vermicast without letting the worms come out, so it is best to open the container and just set it under the sunlight for a while. Worms hate sunlight so they’ll look for cover and you’ll have an easy time to pick up the poop and shut the lid.

The worm farm is wonderful with to help you grow flowers, fruits or even veggies and all you need is a bit of willpower to get the help from these tiny creatures.

How To Prepare Your Fish Pond For Storms

Friday, May 14th, 2010

It does not matter where you live, I am sure that you have storms at some time of the year. In the north of the northern hemisphere, we tend to get lots of rain in winter and spring. In the tropics, there may be monsoons. Whatever you call them, they give off lots of wind and lots of rain in a short space of time – it is basically a storm.

The fact is that, if you know that a storm is approaching, you can take precautions and save your precious fish, whether they are expensive or just dear to you. It might be useful to distinguish between minor and major storms, but that is only helpful if you can trust your meteorologist.

Minor Storms: the first thing to do is to stop feeding your fish, if you have enough notice of the storm. Fish can easily live for weeks on the insects and plant life in the water, so do not be concerned. The reason for stopping feeding is that if the storm damages your filtration system, the quality of the pond water will not deteriorate so much, if there is no uneaten food in it.

Take out some of the water to allow for the rainfall, but do a partial water change too, because otherwise the reduced water level will contain greater levels of toxins until the rain comes.

Remove items from the vicinity that can blow over and fall into your pond. It is a good idea to put a net over the pond to prevent debris being blown into it too. Flying twigs or branches could alarm or even spear your fish.

Major Storms: we are not talking about hurricanes here. If a hurricane threatens to hit, you ought to remove your fish to a temporary tank somewhere safe – maybe a 50 gallon barrel in the basement or somewhere like that.

If you want to be completely certain that your fish will be ok, you could ask your local pet shop to take them away to look after them otherwise proceed as for a minor storm but with the following extra safety measures.

Disconnect all the electrical equipment in and around your fish pond. Make sure that there is no way that a live wire can fall into the pond and electrocute your fish. Remove all the plants from your pond as they could be damaged by the wind and waves, but leave any stone hiding places that your fish will surely look for while the storm is blowing. If you think that perhaps you do not have enough ‘caves’, build some provisional ones from bricks or blocks.

Put a double layer of netting over your pond and tie it lower down than normal, say only a few inches above the water line, but not so low that if a fish gets out, it cannot get back in. Finally, build a wall of sand bags at least two feet high all the way around your pond. This will permit the water to get in and drain away, without taking your fish with it, which is why the net must be high enough to allow the fish to get back into the pond.
