Sam Helps a Dog With Hot Spots

Billy was driving around and had to stop at a red light. As he waited for the light to turn green, he noticed a dog sitting next to a wall licking itself extensively. While he sat and sat, the light seemed to take forever, he watched as the dog chewed and licked itself. As he watched her, he noticed a bright red spot and what appeared like blood. The dog was chewing itself so much, it was starting to bleed.

Billy decided to pull his car over to the curb and have a closer look at her. He was well aware that if he drove away, it would bug him for weeks. As first, when Billy climbed out of his car, the dog didn’t even look at him. As he moved closer, Billy could hear her whimpering as she chewed. He approached her cautiously and slowly reached out to her.

The circular area was swollen and red and was several inches across. She was completely bald in that region, and she continued to chew and lick. The more he watched, the more she just looked wretched.

Todd was fortunate to find a name and phone number on her tags. He called the number and the owner told him that she had escaped the day before and they had been searching for her. When Todd told him about the dog hot spot, the owner was not familiar with the condition, but wanted to get there as soon as possible.

As soon as Sally got there, Sam showed her the hot spot. “Over the years I’ve seen dog hot spots and this is definitely one.”, said Sam. “If this is not taken care of soon, she may get several more sites like it.” They talked about it and decided that the overnight vet a few miles away would be a good idea.

Instead of using soaps and detergents, you can use hot water with little white vinegar to wash and rinse the feeders, as the birds do not like any traces of soap.

Planting some of the favorite plants of hummingbirds will also attract them to your garden. Some of these plants include honeysuckles, petunias, trumpet vine, fuchsias, lilacs, bee balm, geraniums, manzanita, azaleas, butterfly busch, mimosa, columbine, salvia and Indian paintbrush. Take out some of the water to allow for the rainfall, but do a partial water change too, because otherwise the reduced water level will contain greater levels of toxins until the rain comes.
